How Often Should You Get a Haircut?
The definitive guide to haircut frequency based on your style, hair type, and growth rate.
One of the most common questions we hear at the shop is “how often should I come in for a cut?” The answer depends on several factors, but getting it right is key to always looking sharp. Here is our barber’s guide to the perfect haircut schedule.
The General Rule
For most men, a visit to the barber every three to four weeks keeps your style looking fresh. Hair grows about half an inch per month on average, and that growth starts showing at the neckline and around the ears first. If you wait too long between cuts, you lose the shape and structure your barber worked to create.
Think of it like maintaining a car. Regular tune-ups keep everything running smoothly, while neglect leads to bigger problems down the line.
Short Styles and Fades
If you rock a skin fade, buzz cut, or any close-cropped style, you will need to visit more frequently. We recommend every two to three weeks. Fades grow out quickly and can look unkempt within just a couple of weeks, especially around the temples and neckline.
Many of our regular fade clients come in every two weeks like clockwork. It might seem frequent, but a quick cleanup fade takes only 20 to 25 minutes and keeps you looking consistently sharp.
Medium Length Styles
Textured crops, pompadours, and classic side parts have a bit more flexibility. These styles typically look good for three to four weeks before they need attention. The extra length gives you more room to work with before the shape starts to break down.
A good tip is to schedule your next appointment before you leave the shop. That way you are always on a consistent rotation and never have to worry about finding a last-minute opening.
Longer Styles
If you are growing your hair out or maintaining a longer style, you can stretch it to five or six weeks between cuts. However, do not skip trims entirely. Regular trims remove split ends, maintain shape, and actually help your hair look healthier as it grows.
Even if you are in the growing-out phase, a quick visit every six weeks to clean up the neckline and remove bulk keeps the process looking intentional rather than neglected.
Signs It Is Time for a Cut
Beyond the calendar, your hair will tell you when it needs attention. Watch for these signs:
- Your neckline is getting fuzzy or uneven
- The sides feel heavy or puffy
- Your style will not hold its shape even with product
- You are spending more time styling than usual
- People start asking “are you growing your hair out?”
