How to Maintain Your Haircut Between Visits

You just left the barbershop looking amazing. The fade is crisp, the lines are sharp, and your hair is styled to perfection. But how do you keep that fresh-from-the-barber look going strong until your next appointment?

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair

One of the biggest mistakes men make is washing their hair too frequently. Daily shampooing strips the natural oils that keep your hair manageable and your scalp healthy. For most hair types, washing two to three times per week is sufficient.

On non-wash days, you can still rinse with water and use conditioner if needed. This keeps your hair clean without stripping essential moisture. If you have oily hair, a dry shampoo on off days absorbs excess oil without overwashing.

The Right Products Make All the Difference

Using the right product for your style and hair type is crucial. Matte pomades work well for textured, natural-looking styles. Clay provides medium hold with a dry finish, perfect for shorter styles. Gel offers strong hold and shine for slicked-back looks.

The key is using the right amount. Start with a small amount, about the size of a pea for short hair, and add more if needed. Too much product makes hair look greasy and heavy, which defeats the purpose entirely.

Blow-Drying Techniques

A blow dryer is your secret weapon for recreating your barber’s styling at home. Use medium heat and direct the airflow in the direction you want your hair to go. For volume, dry upward and forward from the back. For a sleek look, dry flat against the head.

Always use a nozzle attachment on your dryer. It concentrates the airflow for more precise styling and reduces frizz. Finish with a quick blast of cool air to set the style in place.

Maintaining Your Neckline

Between visits, your neckline is the first thing to grow out and look messy. You can maintain a clean neckline at home with a trimmer. Follow the line your barber established, being careful not to trim too high. When in doubt, leave it and let your barber handle it at your next visit.

Sleeping Smart

Your pillowcase can make or destroy your hairstyle. Silk or satin pillowcases cause less friction, reducing bed head and keeping your hair smoother. If that feels too fancy, simply styling your hair with a small amount of product before bed and wearing a durag or beanie can preserve your shape overnight.

Know When to Go Back

Most haircuts start looking noticeably grown out after three to four weeks. If you have a fade, you might need to visit every two to three weeks to keep it sharp. Pay attention to when your style starts requiring more effort to look good. That is your signal to book your next appointment.
