Preparing for Your First Barbershop Visit

Whether you have been going to a salon your whole life, cutting your own hair, or just never had a professional cut before, your first visit to a barbershop can feel a little intimidating. Here is what to expect and how to make the most of the experience.

Before You Arrive

Bring reference photos. This is the single most helpful thing you can do. Find two or three images of hairstyles you like on people with similar hair type and face shape. Screenshots from Instagram or Pinterest work perfectly. These give your barber a clear starting point for discussion.

Come with clean, dry hair. Arriving with your hair in its natural state helps your barber assess your hair’s texture, growth patterns, and any cowlicks. Avoid wearing hats for a few hours before your appointment, as hat hair can obscure how your hair naturally falls.

Know your basics. You do not need to know technical jargon, but it helps to have a general idea of whether you want it shorter on the sides, how much length you want on top, and whether you have any areas of concern like thinning or a tricky cowlick.

What to Expect

When you arrive, check in at the front. If you have an appointment, your barber will greet you when they are ready. If you are a walk-in, you may need to wait briefly.

The consultation is the most important part of any haircut. Your barber will discuss what you want, assess your hair, and make recommendations. This is your chance to ask questions and express any preferences or concerns. A good barber will never pressure you into something you are not comfortable with.

During the cut itself, relax and enjoy. Many barbershops offer beverages, music, and good conversation. If you prefer quiet, that is completely fine too. Your barber will check in with you throughout the process to make sure things are going in the right direction.

Speaking Up

If something does not look right during the cut, say something immediately. It is much easier to adjust while still in the chair than after the cut is complete. Barbers appreciate feedback because their goal is for you to leave happy.

You are also welcome to ask your barber to explain what they are doing and why. Understanding the “how” behind your haircut helps you communicate better in future visits and maintain the style at home.

After the Cut

Your barber will show you the final result from multiple angles. If you want any small adjustments, now is the time. They will also likely apply styling product and show you how to achieve the look at home.

Ask about product recommendations and maintenance tips. How often should you come back? What products should you use? How should you style it in the morning? A good barber is happy to share this information.

Tipping and Rebooking

Industry standard for tipping is 15 to 20 percent. If your barber went above and beyond, tip accordingly. Before you leave, book your next appointment. Most cuts need refreshing every three to four weeks, and scheduling in advance ensures you get your preferred barber and time slot.

The Big Picture

A barbershop visit should be enjoyable, not stressful. We are here to help you look and feel great. Come as you are, communicate openly, and trust the process. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy the experience and wonder why you did not start sooner.
